Romance is an optional game mechanic that allows the player to date, marry, and have children with any of the 28 eligible NPCs that they have built up a friendship with in Coral Island, regardless of gender. By romancing a character, more information about that character can be learned. The player can be married to one character at a time and have up to two children total.[1]
All of the romanceable characters have several variant outfits that change depending on season and event: one standard outfit per season,[2] one bathing suit outfit, and one festival outfit.[3] By contrast, non-romanceable characters have one standard outfit per season, for a total of over 170 unique outfits between all of the NPCs in Coral Island.
Romance candidates[]
Out of the 50+ characters living on the island, 28 characters are romanceable. Though Ben, Charles, Millie, and Suki were not initially romance candidates, they were added to the original 16-character roster after Coral Island's Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign reached its US$750,000 stretch goal.[4] In the 1.0 update it is now possible to romance 3 new characters, Miranjani, Semeru and Denali, all merfolk.
It is also possible to marry another player in multiplayer mode.[5] Multiplayer is not confirmed to be cross-platform but is under consideration for later in development.[6]
Dating[]
Once the player has reached level 8 of friendship, they will receive a letter from Sanchez Brothers Blacksmith, telling them that to show romantic interest the player must give them a locket that is newly added into their catalog. The locket costs 1,500 .
There is no penalty for giving a locket to multiple romance candidates; the player can date all of them at the same time. However, the player can only marry one person.
If the player does not give a person a locket, their friendship level maximum will be capped at 8 hearts and any heart events above 8 hearts will be unavailable to the player.
Marriage[]

When the player wants to propose to a possible partner (after reaching level 10 of friendship), they will need to buy a diamond ring at the blacksmith. The proposal ring costs 5,000 .
Before the potential partner will agree to marry the player, they must have seen all their heart events.
Proposal prerequisite[]
For a successful proposal, the player needs to complete the following:
• See all heart events of the potential partner - see partner's page for all heart events
• Upgrade farmhouse to level 3
• Buy a diamond ring from the blacksmith
The wedding will take place three days after the proposal (for example, if the proposal is on the 1st, the wedding will take place on the 4th). If the partner is a Merfolk and the 3rd day after the proposal overlaps with one of the surface expedition dates, then the wedding will take place on the first day after the surface expedition (for example, if the proposal is on Summer 20 and the Summer surface expedition runs from Summer 21-28, then the wedding will be on Fall 1).
If the player wants to wear wedding clothes, it should be bought beforehand and put on before leaving the house on the wedding day.
Thank you for the feedback! I have to strongly agree with your last point that love does disappear after marriage in some games. So in here, we plan to have post-marriage events, different dialogues, perhaps dates? or even a domestic (nothing too crazy, but like you said, a little jealousy might be good for the soul)... the events are also gonna depend on how you'd treat your SO. Heh!

Post wedding[]
After the wedding, the spouse of the player will move into their farmhouse. If their spouse is a Merfolk, they will go back to Merfolk Kingdom once per season and spend a night there.
The spouse will have a maximum of 15 hearts and the maximum weekly gift limit is lifted. At the start of every day, there is a chance that the spouse will have a gift for the player. At 14 hearts with the spouse, it is possible for the spouse to ask the player if they want to have a child at the beginning of the day. If the player agrees to have a child, it will appear in the farmhouse in two weeks.
Children[]

Players can have up to two children. The child's skin color and swaddle wrap will look different based on the character the player is married to. Per the current version of the game, the infant can not be interacted with. If the player marries Suki, Valentina will move into Suki's room so as not to reduce the number of new children the player can have.
It is not yet confirmed how children between players in multiplayer mode will be implemented.[8] After having children, the player will continue playing as their character; the children are and will remain NPCs (non-player characters).
We've unlocked another goal! Now all KIDS—your children and the children around the island—will grow up to the teenage years.
This feature will include additional stories and relationship development. There will be new schedules, dialogues, and many more! For the Player's children (you can have up to 2), there will be a variety of children's designs. The children will have their own personality and interest; you can influence this as they grow up, or let them discover it on their own. Worth noting that the children's characters/traits are not exactly tied to the spouse you marry.
Kickstarter Update #11[9]
Trivia[]
- Four sets of the romance candidates are siblings: Rafael and Pablo are brothers, Alice and Suki are twin sisters, and Theo and Lily are brother and sister. Aaliyah and Noah are brother and sister.
- Suki is unique among the romance candidates in that she is a divorcee and has a child of her own already.

What’s clear is that the same platform multiplayer will work. Cross-platform multiplayer is a bit more challenging. The truth is we’re really not sure about cross-platform at this stage. What we can do is add it to our list of things we will explore, and provide the community with an update if and when we tackle this."
